Using nature and the environment to our advantage

The rain of last weekend helped us a lot with the drilling this week. Just enough to make a difference. With 15% left to drill, using 4 varieties over varying soil types, latitude, longitude and elevation we pressed on and had everything in the ground by Friday teatime.

The conditions were very good at the beginning of the week, but drying noticeably by Friday. Nature and the environment are two very fickle and demanding elements of our annual efforts to produce peas. We are very mindful of this and when assessing what we do and how we do it, they are at the forefront of our minds. Without a working environment, food would become scarce.

Even though the drilling programme is completed there is little time for rest. Attention must now turn to start of harvest and season preparations. Looking at the early Prelado and Anubis this week, I had expected them to be a bit further on given the warm weekend we had. However they still look very well, full of flower and I would imagine we shall be harvesting them in the second week of June.

There was also time for a quick visit to the factory to check on various operational items. Row upon row of empty boxes which want filling with peas greeted me. No pressure then! Time now to call The Pod Squad in to get the harvesting operation put together!
