5 Mar , 2017

A very frustrating week. It looked as though it would dry and then more rain came along. Whilst it is still early days it would be nice to have some continuity with our sowing program. Next week’s forecast does look drier but the land is now reasonably wet. Soil temperatures are warmer than last year, […]

Historical setting for The Royal Ag Societies today to welcome new Associates and Fellows. It was also a chance to talk to those in The House about the current issues Uk Agriculture faces. Back on the ranch, pea drilling continues with good growth in 72 hours with some high, for the time of year, soil temperatures.

The viners are returning from their winter overhaul. Seed is beginning to arrive on the farm. It won’t be long now before we start thinking about putting some perfect Peas in the ground for harvesting in June. Hoping for better weather than Spain!

22 Aug , 2016

A few days ahead of Rio we had our own closing ceremony on the 2016 pea harvest. No fireworks, not too many medals but pleased that what was a long and challenging season is now behind us. All the green peas are done and those that we bypassed have been combined. In the final analysis […]

Sunday 7th August 2016

7 Aug , 2016

A rest this weekend before what I hope will be the final push. We are 80% through and have just over 1000 acres to go. The recent hot days and particularly warm nights will have helped. The bottom podding problem appears to be behind us (no pun intended!) and crops are more even up the […]

Monday 1st August 2016

1 Aug , 2016

This pea harvest has been anything but straightforward! The fact that farmers were pulling daffodils on 1st January was an indication that things did not bode well. Anyway, we have what we have and will make the most of it.  In the last 48 hours yields have fallen dramatically due to bottom podding, which is […]

Sunday 24th July 2016

25 Jul , 2016

The story of the last week has been the high temperatures! Yes it has been over 30C in the day but the continued high night time temperatures have been the killer! Rarely getting below 16C. This was the week we started the petit pois so a roller coaster ride and at times emotional. Yields have […]

Saturday 16th July 2016

16 Jul , 2016

Apart from a very scarce shower a dry week if a little chilly at times. Overnight temperatures did drop to 10C. Having had 18 hours off it was back into the Savanah north of Boston running at mostly 110TR with a few popping into B grade. Men and machines ran well and we were even […]

9 Jul , 2016

It’s been a while!  Apologies. We have now been going a couple of weeks and have covered a lot of ground. All the Anubis, Style and Span have been completed and we started in the Savanah last night. Yields have been variable and some of our late peas are looking I’ll due to all the […]

Saturday 25th June 2016

26 Jun , 2016

So a little later than usual we are under way for the 2016 season in Anubis at Baston. First day is always a bit of a steady day to bed everything in and all went well. The PMCs set off and Neils came over from Holland to set the Ploeger up. The new Bailey high […]

20 Jun , 2016

South Lincolnshire has really been under water this week. The localised storms have produced in excess of 60mm of rain in places. We have also had a heavy band of hail through which has destroyed 62 acres of Savanah that was looking fantastic. Putting that behind us we have started sampling and should get going […]

Saturday 11th June 2016

12 Jun , 2016

That’s it. Under a “sea fret” drilling was finally completed this week up in The Wolds. There is no rest though. We appear to be at war on many fronts! The drilling was completed just eight hours before storms ravaged Lincolnshire which is causing havoc with the early peas. They don’t know whether they are […]
